Our Full Day Birdwatching in Cusco is designed to deliver maximum variety in a single day, combining wetlands, Sacred Valley habitats, and high-elevation highlands for an outstanding species mix. With excellent chances to find Cusco-region endemics, it’s a rewarding option for both dedicated birders and first-time visitors. Photographers love the open viewing at lagoons, the close hummingbird action in gardens, and the dramatic Andean scenery as a backdrop. Logistics are simple and efficient, with optimized driving distances and well-timed stops. You’ll be guided by local experts who read habitats and bird behavior to maximize sightings.
Just southeast of Cusco, Huacarpay Lake is one of the region’s most productive wetland birding areas. Reeds, marsh vegetation, and open water attract a high concentration of birds, making it possible to build a strong species list quickly—often with comfortable, easy viewing.

The wild tree tobacco and surrounding vegetation can be especially good for hummingbirds and specialties when conditions align.
Next, we visit the Sacred Garden, a lush birding stop in the Sacred Valley area where hummingbird activity can be wonderfully close and continuous. The setting also delivers sweeping mountain-and-valley views—excellent for both birdwatching and photography.

You’ll also see local agriculture (quinoa, corn, and other crops), adding a cultural layer to the landscape.
To finish the day, we head toward Laguna de Rumichaca, where higher elevation habitats can add a completely different set of species. This is an excellent place to target puna birds and highland specialties, especially for birders building a serious Cusco checklist.

Species to watch for may include:
Depending on conditions, the uphill sections can also favor species such as Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, White-tufted Sunbeam, and Creamy-crested Spinetail.
This is not only a birding day—it’s a Cusco landscape experience. Along the route, you’ll see (and in some areas stop near) remnants of Wari (pre-Inca) culture, including the Pikillacta archaeological zone and nearby structures. Few birding days offer this kind of mix: wetlands and hummingbirds in the morning, highland habitats later, and ancient stonework woven into the scenery.

Endemics and key targets vary by habitat, but the most regular regional endemics for this route include:
Additional highland targets may include specialties such as Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch (often sought-after in the region) and other puna favorites depending on the season and current bird activity.

Start early with a short drive south of Cusco to Huacarpay Lake, a high-Andean wetland perched above 10,500 ft. Here, two lagoons—fringed with reeds and nutrient-rich marshes—create perfect conditions for birdwatching.
The open shoreline and wide views make spotting birds easy, and your guide will bring a spotting scope to help you scan the water and reedbeds.
Along the lake you can find classic Andean waterbirds such as White-tufted Grebe, Puna Ibis, Puna Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Duck, plus rails and lapwings. In the rushes, watch for Cinereous Harrier, Yellow-winged Blackbird, Wren-like Rushbird, and the striking Many-colored Rush-Tyrant.
The surrounding slopes—dry ravines, rocky hills, cacti, and tree tobacco—add another set of species, including Bare-faced Ground-Dove, Streak-fronted Thornbird, finch flocks, and the Rusty-fronted Canastero (endemic). With luck, you may also spot raptors such as Aplomado Falcon and buzzard-eagles.
This area also holds one of the morning’s most exciting targets: the Bearded Mountaineer (endemic), often seen feeding on the yellow flowers of tree tobacco near the wetlands.
After birding Huacarpay, we continue along the Sacred Valley road, enjoying Andean scenery and views of pre-Incan/Incan ruins in the vicinity. We then stop at the famous Sacred Garden (Hummingbird Garden) for close-range hummingbird watching. Depending on the day, you may see Giant Hummingbird, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Sparkling Violetear, White-bellied Hummingbird, and other colorful valley species. Cusco weather can shift quickly. Guides adjust timing and order of stops to protect the experience—often moving to sheltered areas, changing the sequence of sites, or extending the most productive location for the day.
Absolutely. We encourage it. eBird is excellent for hotspot checklists and recent sightings, and Merlin helps with quick identification in the field.
It can be arranged either way depending on your preference and availability. Private tours are ideal for photographers and serious birders who want more control over pacing.

I was in Cusco with an extra free day and sent an email the day before to see if there was an opportunity to do some birding in the area. Luis got right back to me and we arranged a day tour of Lake Huarcapay and the Sacred Valley. The trip, even though there was rain, was awesome. He picked me up from the hotel, we visited several areas, he took care of lunch and really knew where to go and what to see. Awesome trip. I will definitely travel with them again.
A relaxed day of birding with Luis. We saw a lot of waterbirds and hummingbirds. Really nice. Luis had good equipment and after Huarcapay lake we visited an archeological site where we saw the endemic hummingbird. Because of the rain, we could not go up the mountain but visited a beautiful campsite full of hummingbirds. Amazing! Thanks, Luis for a great day birding.
